ASBMB Elected Position Nominations

Nominations for positions opening July 1, 2026 will open in late September 2025 and close November 5, 2025.

Each year, ASBMB solicits nominations (including self-nominations) from members for elected positions within the society. In any year, those positions will include council members and may include, depending on the year, president, secretary, treasurer, Nominating Committee member, and/or Publications Committee member. ASBMB's nomination timeline has changed to hold an annual call for nominations in the fall and an election in January of each year. Learn more about the change here.

Elected positions open in 2026

What to have ready for a nomination

  • Basic candidate information: name, email, institution, title, degree, area of expertise
  • A statement of interest/nomination statement describing why you or the candidate are interested in serving, including qualifications (max. 500 words)
  • Candidate's curriculum vitae (CV)

Qualifications

  • Current ASBMB membership — nominees and nominators must be current members, and nominees must be a member type eligible to hold elected office.
  • Additional qualifications vary by position: see descriptions linked under 'elected positions open in 2026' above.
  • As ASBMB pursues its strategic plan, it seeks individuals for Council with experience in areas of current priority. The Nominating Committee especially seeks Council candidates who bring the following experiences and encourages nominators to speak to this experience in their nomination statements:
    • A translational research focus, especially alongside industry connections or experience
    • Experience or current appointment at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI)
    • Experience and understanding of higher education encompassing the broader academic and career journeys of students. Ideal candidates will appreciate the role our community plays at both undergraduate and graduate levels, recognize the diverse career paths of emerging researchers, and help position this diversity as a strength. We value voices that can build bridges with related fields — including biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical education — while maintaining and advancing our unique role in the scientific pipeline.

Candidate review process and election

After the submission deadline, members of ASBMB’s Nominating Committee review the nominations and discuss candidates for vacant elected positions. In its deliberations, the Committee considers myriad factors of diversity including scientific expertise, institution, and other demographic information. The group also considers factors like relevant leadership experience and previous involvement with ASBMB. The Nominating Committee will finalize a slate for member election that includes one candidate for Treasurer-elect (one will be elected), four candidates for councilor (two will be elected), and two candidates for Nominating Committee (one will be elected). ASBMB will work with a third party partner to administer an election
